The project is coordinated by the Institute for Atmospheric Science and Climate of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR–ISAC). The DIAPASON partnership involves an Italian environmental protection agency (ARPA-Lazio), a German industry (JENOPTIK-ESW withdrew on March 31, 2013) and a French industry (LEOSPHERE).

 

CNR-ISAC Coordinator

The Italian National Research Council (CNR, www.cnr.it) is a public organization established in 1923 that carries out research activities for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country. Currently CNR is devoted to scientific and technological research in the following areas: biotechnology, medicine, materials, earth and environment, information and communications, advanced systems of production, judicial and socio-economic sciences, classical studies and arts.
The Institute of Atmospheric Science and Climate (ISAC, www.isac.cnr.it) is a nation-wide CNR institute including over 200 staff members, with headquarter in Bologna.
ISAC carries on scientific and technological research in the following disciplines: Meteorology, Climate change and predictability, Atmospheric structure and composition, Earth Observations.

 

Short CV of the project coordinator, Dr. Gian Paolo Gobbi

Physicist, Director of Research at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the Italian National Research Council, CNR, Rome (Italy).

Field of Expertise: Aerosol remote-sensing, design and operation of lidar (laser radar) systems, ground-based and satellite photometry, modeling of aerosol and cloud physical properties.

Research experience:

Since 1976 has implemented Doppler (wind), Rayleygh (temperature), and several Mie (aerosol) lidars. These systems were operated both in Italy and Antarctica. In 1999 established the mobile lidar laboratory VELIS (Vehicle-mounted Lidar System) for the field observation of aerosol-related parameters. Starting in 2001 established an aerosol monitoring station at ISAC Rome (AEROLAB) exploiting a polarization lidar, sunphotometer and satellite observations. In 2010 AEROLAB was expanded to in situ aerosol observations (nephelometer, optical particle counter, absorption photometer, gas analyser). Is PI of two AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) stations (http://aeronet.gsfc.nasa.gov): Rome Tor Vergata (since 2001) and EvK2-CNR (Himalaya, Nepal, since 2006). Participated in international (EU, CNRS, NASA, UK Met Office, ESA), and national (ASI, PNRA, MUR, INGV) research projects. Since September 2011 is coordinator of the EC LIFE Project DIAPASON. His work is summarized in over one hundred scientific publications (e.g., http://ars.ifa.rm.cnr.it).
