DIAPASON software to implement the EC Guidelines 2011
In order to apply the methodology suggested by the EC Guidelines in the assessment of Saharan dust events, DIAPASON has implemented a semi-automated system to collect, organize and store the information necessary to identify desert dust advections and to evaluate their contribution to the observed PM10 levels.
An intuitive graphical user interface has been developed to operate the system and to analyse the collected data in a user-friendly way. The system is composed by different modules performing the following steps:
1) Search on the web, organize and store in a database the information required by the EC Guidelines to detect dust events (automated module);
2) Analyse the collected information and select the dates with Saharan dust advection events (user-friendly module);
3) Quantify the effects of these events on the PM10 levels measured at the ground by the air quality monitoring network (automated module).
The system has been successfully tested over the whole Lazio region employing the year 2009 data and is now operative to evaluate the influence of Saharan dust on the daily PM10 levels measured in the Rome metropolitan area. Rome
