The DIAPASON measuring activities will be carried out at three sites, one representative of regional background and two of urban background conditions.

An initial selection process led to choose the following observational sites:

1) ISAC Tor Vergata, Rome (Urban-Rural background)

>The Rome Tor Vergata site is considered an urban background in the south eastern portion of the city (41°50.4‘ N - 12°38.8‘ E, altitude: 110m asl).

2) Via Boncompagni, Rome (Urban background)

3) Castel di Guido, Rome (Regional background)


Two more stations will also be used in the project as back-up sites:

4) Leonessa (Regional background) and

5) Villa Ada (Urban background)

The three sites are locations where the project beneficiaries (either CNR-ISAC or ARPA Lazio) have been carrying out aerosol measurements for several years, and whose historical records can significantly support the project implementation.

In particular, the ISAC Rome Atmospheric Supersite (RAS) holds a comprehensive historical data-set including aerosol measurements made by the VELIS polarization Lidar, a research system developed in ISAC in 1999 ( which will be used to validate the collocated PLC prototype performances.

Particular attention has been paid to the choice of the regional background site as this plays a major role in the implementation of the EC Guidelines baseline desert dust detection methodology. To ensure representativeness of the DIAPASON regional background station the guidelines given also by NILU (2001) and Spang et al. (2007) have been taken into account.
